Constructed circa 1845, 79 Waterloo Road had not undergone major interventions since the 1980s until Sunni Goodson became involved. The building faced issues such as water ingress, structural subsidence, and years of wear, necessitating a series of coordinated repairs informed by expertise in historic buildings and project management. An outside-in approach was employed to prioritize and sequence work over two years following planning permission.
Works were competitively tendered to qualified contractors and carried out through a multidisciplinary effort, first ensuring the building was weathertight and structurally sound before undertaking sensitive upgrades to building services. Inappropriate aluminum windows were replaced with period-appropriate timber sash units, while compliance with Building Regulations required innovative solutions to protect historic features.
The front parapet was rebuilt, the facade was repointed with lime mortar, and plastic masonry repairs were completed. The rear elevation’s cement render was also replaced with lime. Heritage grant funding secured for the client required ongoing collaboration with the local Conservation Department. Internally, care was taken to preserve all significant historic features, repair plasterwork, enhance joinery, and introduce bold paint finishes, fixtures, and soft furnishings. Sunni managed the project from concept to completion, often while clients were abroad.
